What is Sikalastic 1K ES and why do we use it in pools

Sikalastic 1K ES is a one-component waterproofing coating based on cement, polymer-modified and fibre-reinforced. It’s ideal for areas in constant contact with water, such as:

  • Interior structures of pools

  • Compensation tanks

  • Outdoor technical zones

  • Terraces and balconies around the pool

Its high flexibility allows it to accommodate natural structural movements, preventing cracks and leaks. Moreover, it adheres well even to slightly damp substrates, speeding up construction timelines and avoiding unnecessary delays.

 

How to apply Sikalastic 1K ES – Key steps for a perfect result

  1. Surface preparation

  • Everything starts with a well-prepared base:

  • Deep cleaning of the surface: free from dust, grease or loose particles

  • Repairing cracks or damaged zones with compatible mortars

  • Light moistening of the surface before application (no free-standing water)

A clean, cohesive base is half the work toward long-lasting waterproofing.

  1. Mixing the product

  • Pour 4.5 to 5 litres of clean water into a bucket

  • Gradually add the contents of the 20 kg Sikalastic 1K ES bag

  • Mix with a low-speed mixer until a creamy, homogeneous paste is obtained

⚠️ Pro tip: only mix the amount you can apply within 30 minutes.

  1. Application in crossed layers

    Apply in two crossed layers using a brush, trowel or roller.

  • First layer: apply evenly, covering the entire surface

  • Waiting time: let dry to the touch (minimum 4 hours)

  • Second layer: apply in the opposite direction to the first

In critical areas like joints, corners or level changes, we incorporate reinforcing mesh between layers for added safety.

  • Curing and protection

  • After application, it’s essential to follow proper curing procedures:

  • Protect from rain or direct sunlight for the first 24–48 hours

  • Avoid foot traffic during curing

  • Total cure time: around 7 days before applying tile or glass mosaic
