Phosphates in Your Pool? Pools and More’s Guide for Impeccable Water
At Pools and More, we know that a crystal-clear pool is the result of meticulous care and well-informed maintenance. Among the factors that most compromise water quality, excess phosphates are one of the quietest — but also one of the most harmful. That’s why we share a practical guide, based on our experience, to help you keep your pool algae-free and always inviting.
What are phosphates?
Phosphates are chemical compounds containing phosphorus, an element essential for the growth of plants and aquatic organisms. Although phosphorus is necessary for life, in excess in pool water, it becomes food for algae, favouring their development.
How phosphates enter your pool
Phosphates act as a natural fertiliser for algae. They enter the pool through rain, leaves, dust, plant debris, garden fertilisers or even top-up water. Once present, they accumulate silently, feeding algae and making conventional treatments like chlorine or shock treatments ineffective.
When to check phosphates in your pool
We recommend measuring the phosphate level at the start of each swimming season and, during the warmest months, carrying out monthly checks to prevent unpleasant surprises.
A healthy phosphate level should remain below 100 ppb — that’s about 10 g per 100 m³ of water.
Step 1: Water analysis
Use test strips or specific liquid kits for precise measurement.
Pools and More suggestion: Pool Test Strips — Ideal for quick, reliable checks.
Step 2: Pools and More Anti-Phosphate Treatment
After checking the levels, apply an effective anti-phosphate product.
Recommended Dose Calculation:
Quantity (ml) = 0.015 x Pool Volume (m³) x Phosphate Level (ppb)
Example:
40 m³ pool with 250 ppb:
0.015 x 40 x 250 = 150 ml of anti-phosphate product
Pools and More Chemical Suggestions:
Algae Treatment — To stop algae spread.
Bayrol ® — Perfect as an algae preventative and a maintenance complement for crystal-clear water.
Step 3: Continuous Filtration with Pools and More Solutions
Keep the filtration system running for 24 hours after applying the anti-phosphate. Retest the phosphates to confirm the treatment’s effectiveness. If the water looks cloudy, use a suitable flocculant or clarifier.
Recommended Pools and More Products:
CTX AlgaStop — Universal clarifier for clear water.
Flocculants — Removes floating particles.
Step 4: Preventive Maintenance with Pools and More
To avoid phosphate build-up:
-
Vacuum and clean leaves, insects and debris.
